About Us

Flower Cottage was purchased by us in 2012 after we spent several enjoyable family holidays in the area and had fallen in love with Whitby's rugged coastline, Medieval history and the combination of fun and homespun Yorkshire warmth and traditional values.

This is not a conventional investment type holiday let. This is our well loved second home. We use it regularly and keep it clean, comfortable and homely.

10% of your rent will go directly to the local council to help pay for local services as we would rather help the area than prop up private businesses who often have no real connection with the town or local people. We live our values and employ Dalewood Trust when possible  (a local, charitable training organisation for adults with significant learning difficulties) to do laundry and supply plants and supply wooden fixtures for the house and garden. This year they have custom made us planters and a new bench for our garden.

The house is particularly suitable for families; boasting two attic  and two king sized first floor bedrooms.

The second floor, top bedroom contains wooden framed twin single beds. A stair gate is a permanent feature here at the top of the stairs to keep your youngsters safe.

The largest king sized bedroom features a beautiful bay window and an original, now decorative, fireplace. Also on this first floor, the second king- sized bedroom is bright and cheerful and features a gothic style iron bedstead.

The modern bathroom on the half- landing has an effective shower over the full sized white bath and other usual items.

We refurbish large areas of our house every year. This year we have repainted the two top floor bedrooms and had new carpets laid there and on the upper staircase.

Flower Cottage has effective gas central heating, a modern, safe electric fire in the lounge and fans to cool the attic bedrooms in the summer months. All heating, lighting, hot water and linen is included in the letting price.

The front of the house has a smart, chipped garden, usually with planters brimming over with seasonal blooms. To the rear of the house, via the kitchen back door, is a small courtyard area where smoking is permitted - but not in the house.

Pets are welcomed by arrangement provided you care for our property. Pet owners find the secure, locked courtyard area useful.

There is free parking on Grey Street on a first come first served basis, and many visitors have found that they park their cars then walk or use the excellent bus or train services during most of their stay.

The high quality fresh local produce available in the shops in Whitby and its excellent selection of restaurants , hotels, cafes, pubs and take away, mean that it is hard not to be well fed when here. The town also boasts three major supermarkets and numerous, excellent, small local food retailers.

Many visitors enjoy trips on the local North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway, particularly as the station is only a two-minute walk away from the house.

Whitby Pavillion ( 15 minutes walk from the house) shows recently released films ( and some classics) and accommodates exhibitions, sales and musical and dramatic performances throughout the year. The town has taken on new life recently thanks to wonderfully colourful themed weekends such as Goth ( Oct and April) 40s, 50s, 60s, Folk, Pirates, Steam Punk, Christmas and other events. All good fun, usually good-natured - and safe.

Local free attractions are the best - the gorgeous local beach, rugged North Yorkshire countryside and the views of the lighthouses and ruined St Hilda's Abbey. Fossil hunting and fishing off the pier are free to all. Golf, organised fishing- trips, swimming and other sports ( at the local leisure centre), surfing, shooting and horse- riding are also available locally. The beautiful Pannet Park and well kept Victorian museum are five minutes walk from the house and the Abbey Visitor Centre is not to be missed. Information about these and very many other local nearby attractions are available to you to peruse at your leisure in Flower Cottage and from our excellent Tourist Infirmation Centre at the harbour, five minutes walk away.
